Herbert Thomas Kalmus (1881–1963) was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts (United States), where he earned his bachelor’s degree from the Institute of Technology. He continued his education in Zurich (Switzerland) and later became a professor at Queen’s University in Ontario (Canada). Together with Daniel Comstock and Burton Wescott, he founded the Technicolor Motion Picture Corporation, which pioneered color film. Kalmus served as the company’s director for over forty years. He was an avid art collector and amassed a notable collection. Between 1952 and 1962, he donated a large portion of the pieces to American foundations and institutions.
