Description

The Hospital of Santa María de Esgueva, founded by Pedro Ansúrez and Doña Eylo between 1073-1109, was intended to attend to the poor of Valladolid. It assisted the sick, the needy poor, the elderly and later took care of poor maidens by granting them a dowry (Tiedra, 1937). The National Library of Madrid houses the ordinances (Mss. 9468) that regulate the operation of the institution since 1440.
