The Musée Bonnat-Helleu. Musée des beaux-arts de Bayonne was built between 1896 and 1898 under the direction of the architect Charles Planckaert. The city decided to build this museum in order to gather and exhibit the works of art it had been acquiring since the 1830s. Its name pays tribute to Léon Bonnat (1833-1922), an outstanding painter born in Bayonne, whose generous donation of works significantly enriched the museum's collection. Among the works from Castilla y León housed in the museum are El Salvador, St. Peter and St. John the Evangelist.
