Bacri Frères

Paris (France)

Description

The Bacri brothers came from a family of wealthy merchants who had amassed their fortune in North Africa. In the 1860s, they moved to Paris, where Jacob, Joseph, Salomon, Adolphe, Samuel, and David Bacri built their business by selling jewelry and works of art (Freyermuth, 2022). In the wake of World War II, the Bacri brothers were forced to leave the capital in 1940 and settled in Cusset, France. The property they had left behind in Paris was seized by the Germans during the occupation. After the liberation, Jacques Bacri (1911–1965) began demanding the restitution of his family’s property and compensation; this is how he recovered part of the collection (Freyermuth, 2022). Clotilde Bacri, his daughter, continued this effort and succeeded in having four more pieces returned. Finally, in March 2017, the pieces that the Bacri brothers had treasured were auctioned at Sotheby’s and dispersed among various museums and institutions.
