Description

The Convent of San Francisco (Cuéllar, Segovia) dates back to 1257. However, it reached its peak in the 15th century, as it was the site chosen by the Dukes of Alburquerque for their burial. Inside, it housed the tombs of Don Gutierre de la Cueva and Mencía Enríquez de Toledo (Merino de Cáceres, 1991; Marcos Villán, 1998), which are currently preserved at The Hispanic Society of America (New York, United States). In the 19th century, the convent was confiscated, and in 1915 the last duke sold it to Bienvenido Álvarez, leading to the sale and dispersal of its assets (Martínez Ruiz, 2008).
