Lewis Cass Ledyard

New York (United States)

Description

Lewis Cass Ledyard (1851-1932) was born in Detroit, Michigan. He was the son of Henry Brockholst Ledyard and Matilda Frances Cass. He wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and studied law and the arts at Harvard. Thus it was that he became a lawyer in 1875 and joined the firm of Scudder & Carter, which would become Carter, Ledyard & Milburn a few years later. His career was quite notable, advising major corporations such as U.S. Steel and acting as personal attorney to John Pierpont Morgan. Ledyard was passionate about culture, which led him to become president of the New York Public Library from 1917-1932 and a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of art and the Morgan Library & Museum.
