Description

Gustave Revilliod (1817-1890) was born in Geneva. He was the son of Philippe-Léonard Revilliod and Ariane-Philippine de la Rive. He studied law in Geneva and was a deputy of the Grand Conseil du canton de Genève. However, his passion was to travel. He took advantage of his family's financial resources to travel the world and acquire works of art. In 1877 he founded the Ariana Museum with the aim of exhibiting his personal collection and in 1890 he bequeathed the museum to the city of Geneva, dying shortly after in Cairo. Today the institution is known as the Swiss Museum of Ceramics and Glass (Musée Ariana).
