Philip V (1683-1746) was the first king of the Bourbon dynasty in Spain. He acceded to the throne in 1700 after the death of Charles II, which provoked the War of the Spanish Succession. During his reign, centralizing reforms inspired by the French model were introduced. In 1724 he abdicated for a brief period in favor of his son Louis I, who died a few months later, so Philip returned to the throne. He died in 1746 in Madrid and was succeeded by his son Ferdinand VI.
