The Monastery of Santa María de Nogales was founded in 1150 by the counts Vela Gutiérrez and Sancha de Cabrera. It is located in San Esteban de Nogales (León). It had a great religious and cultural relevance during the Middle Ages. It was a prosperous settlement that housed in its interior the funeral chapels of the founders, their descendants and other prominent figures such as Suero de Quiñones and Elvira de Zúñiga (Zalama, 2003). With the disentailment, the monastery was abandoned and left in ruins.
