Description

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Llana (Cerezo del Río Tirón, Burgos) was a Romanesque building probably erected in the last third of the 12th century (Govantes, 1851). At the beginning of the 19th century, it fell into disuse, and worship was suspended (Pérez Avellaneda, 2015), which led to its neglect, and by the 20th century, it was in a state of ruin (Alonso Fernández, 2018). Only a few remnants remain of what the church might have originally been: two capitals, four columns, a relief depicting the Adoration of the Magi, and the southern portal (Andrés Ordax, 1987). In 1926, a report reached the Ministry of Foreign Affairs warning that a ship loaded with goods from Spain was about to depart for New York. The person responsible for this shipment was Raimundo Ruiz, a collector who, in the 20th century, specialised in selling Spanish art abroad (Martínez Ruiz, 2011). Spanish agents intervened at the port of Vitoria, seizing the items that were about to be shipped, including the Romanesque portal from Cerezo del Río Tirón (Martínez Ruiz, 2010). Ultimately, the portal was placed in the capital of Burgos, but the relief of the Adoration of the Magi was sold and is currently housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
