Juan Alfonso Pimentel Enríquez (1553-1621) was the son of Antonio Alonso Pimentel and Luisa Enríquez Girón, counts of Benavente. They supported Isabella in the war of Castilian succession, which led them to establish important agreements with the crown. He married Catalina Vigil de Quiñones, VI Countess of Luna, in 1570, but died a few years later, incorporating the inheritance of the Luna family (Simal, 2002). He had an outstanding political and military career: he was named viceroy of Valencia in 1598 and viceroy of Naples in 1602 (Raneo, 1853). In addition, he distinguished himself as a patron of the arts, amassing a valuable collection of paintings, sculpture and an extensive library, including works by Caravaggio, El Greco and Velázquez (Morán and Checa, 1985). He died in Madrid shortly after having been named majordomo mayor of Isabella I of Castile.
