The Bowes Museum was commissioned by John Bowes (1811-1885) and Joséphine Benoîte Coffin-Chevallier (1825-1874). However, the couple died before its inauguration, which took place in 1892. The building followed the designs of Jules Antoine Pellechet and John Edward Watson. It houses the couple's collection of more than 800 paintings and 15,000 pieces of sumptuary arts (Chapman, 2010).
