John Bowes (1811-1885) was born into a wealthy mining family. From an early age he became interested in the art world. He went to Paris for a period of time and there he met Joséphine Benoîte Coffin-Chevallier (1825-1874). She worked as an actress and was also a passionate collector. They married in 1852 and over time they built up a large art collection. Their intention was to create a museum where they could exhibit their pieces, however, they died before the construction was completed.
