The construction of the Plaza Hotel began in 1883 by architects McKim, Mead and White. It opened its doors for the first time on October 1, 1890, however, in 1905 the building was demolished to build a larger one. The new building was inaugurated on October 1, 1907. The hotel has been the setting for numerous films, including Home Alone 2 and The Great Gatsby.
