Description

The Cistercian Monastery of Santa María la Real has its origins in a primitive monastery linked to the monastery of San Vicente, documented since the 11th century. In 1223, García Fernández de Villamayor and his wife, Doña Mayor Arias, acquired the property and endowed it with some properties (Hernando, 2002). The construction of the temple took place between 1223-1286. The building had a single nave with transept, polygonal apse and ribbed vaults, following the models of the cathedral of Burgos and San Andrés de Arroyo (Hernando, 2002).
