George Villiers (1592-1628) was born in Brooksby, although he was soon sent to France by his parents. There he received a careful training and, after returning to England, he gained the favor of James I. He was made 1st Earl of Buckingham in 1617 and Marquess in 1623. That same year he accompanied the Prince of Wales, the future Charles I, to Spain to negotiate his marriage with the Infanta Maria Ana (Carlton, 1995).
