The Colegio Mayor de San Bartolomé, known as Palacio de Anaya, was founded by Diego de Anaya (1357-1437) in 1401. The purpose of this institution was to provide a scholarship so that intelligent young people who lacked economic resources could study. However, over time the places were filled by students who came from wealthy families. The Lisbon earthquake (1755) severely damaged the structure of the building, which meant that a new one had to be built. This was designed by José de Hermosilla and Juan de Sagarvinaga.
