Description

The Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos was originally founded in the 10th century, but it acquired relevance from 1041, when the monk Domingo Manso was appointed abbot. Under his leadership, the rule of Saint Benedict was adopted and relations with the monarchy were strengthened, which attracted multiple donations and protected the monastery from external interference. In 1076, after his death, he was canonized and became the central figure of the monastery, which was renamed St. Dominic in his honor. Throughout the 12th century the monastery grew and obtained privileges, such as episcopal exemption. Between the 11th and 13th centuries the cloister was built. It has two levels: the lower one, begun around 1088, and the upper one, completed in the 13th century. Its capitals are decorated with biblical scenes, allegories and fantastic motifs (Senra, 2002).
