Matteo Luigi Canonici (1727-1805) was born in Venice and was the son of Andrea and Margherita Rossi. In 1743 he became a Jesuit and moved to Parma. Canonici was passionate about history and art, which led him to amass a large collection. Initially he acquired paintings, however, this did not please his superiors, so he was forced to sell them. He later settled in Venice, where he bought medals, coins, manuscripts and sculptures, forming one of the most important collections of the time. After his death the collection passed into the hands of his brother Giuseppe Canonici.
