Description

The origins of the Bodleian Library date back to 1320, when a room was prepared as a library in the sacristy of the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin. Subsequently, Henry V's younger brother, Humfrey, donated his manuscript collection to the university. This act made the university decide to create its own space to house the volumes. Thus the new library was inaugurated in 1488. Later, Thomas Bodley (1545-1613) remodeled the building, donated numerous books and managed to collect more than two thousand copies. After Bodley, the library had other patrons, such as John Radcliffe, who bequeathed a large sum to erect a new building and continue acquiring books.
