Description

The origins of the Monastery of San Miguel de los Ángeles (Villadiego, Burgos) date back to the mid-15th century, when Bishop Luis de Acuña favored "the foundation of the Convent dedicated to San Miguel in Villadiego, which belongs to the Augustinian Canonesses Regular, whose construction was begun by Alonso Rodríguez de S. Cruz in the mid-15th century" (Flórez, ). The monastery was sponsored by the Rodríguez de Santa Cruz family, who founded it and donated part of their assets to finance the construction of the building (Castillo, 2012). During the War of Independence, the temple was first occupied by French soldiers and then by the Duke of Wellington (Gurwood, 1838). After the war, monastic life recovered, but the successive confiscations of Mendizábal and Madoz seriously affected its properties and rights (Castillo, 2012).
