The León mint was inaugurated in the 11th century, alongside the mints in Toledo and Santiago de Compostela. From the second half of the 13th century, under the reign of Alfonso X, coins of good quality began to be minted (Fuentes, 2007). Money changers and coin makers were located at the Puerta Moneda, the place where goods entered the city: "there is evidence of the existence of a mint in León since the days of Alfonso VI. Its location in the Burgo de los Francos and at one of the entrances to it gave the street the name Moneda, as well as the nearby gate" (Represa, 1953).
