The British Museum originated in 1753 with the opening of a public museum by Parliament. However, the visit of the collections was restricted only to scholars and those who had sufficient contacts to enter. This regulation was modified in 1830, allowing access to everyone. The museum was originally housed in Montagu House, a 17th century mansion. This building became too small and in 1823 it was demolished to erect the present museum, designed by Robert Smirke.
