Alfred Chester Beatty (1875–1968) was a businessman active in the mining industry. In addition to his career as an entrepreneur, Beatty was a major collector of manuscripts and works of art (Hayes, 1958; Horton, 2003; Cleaver, 2017). Although he lived in London for most of his life, in 1950 he moved to Dublin, where he founded the Chester Beatty Library. He auctioned off part of his manuscript collection on several occasions; in fact, in 1933 a large number of them were sold at Sotheby’s (Wilson, 1985).
