This work was sold by Souffrice to Hermann Göring in the 1940s. © Museo del Louvre.
Description

Jean-Louis Souffrice (1900–1990) was a Parisian antique dealer who ran the Galerie Voltaire, located at 33 Quai Voltaire (Paris). Between 1939 and 1940, he was forced to close his business as a result of the war, but by the end of 1940 he was able to reopen it. In 1942, he moved to 10 bis Avenue de la Grande-Armée. Souffrice sold some pieces to prominent German clients, including Hermann Göring (Yeide, 2009), a Nazi officer and commander of the Luftwaffe. The Comité de confiscation des profits illicites ruled that Souffrice had deliberately concealed these sales and had collaborated with the Nazis by supplying them with works of art. Thus, the owner of the Galerie Voltaire was forced to pay 1,234,890 French francs (Chapelle, 2021).
