Description

The Munich Central Collecting Point was a warehouse used by the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives (MFAA) program after the end of World War II. The goal was to recover works of art that had been confiscated by the Nazis, photograph them, study them, and return them to their rightful owners. Craig Hugh Smyth, an American art historian, was responsible for managing the Munich Central Collecting Point beginning in 1945. Most of the objects came from European museums and private collections, primarily French and Dutch. All kinds of artworks passed through the warehouse: paintings, sculptures, textiles, silverware, etc. The Munich Central Collecting Point ceased operations in 1951 (Lauterbach, 2015).
