Originally, the main purpose of the Episcopal Palace was to serve as a residence and seat for the bishops of Palencia. In 1465, a riot had destroyed the original building, which was rebuilt under Bishop Cristóbal Fernández Valtodano in the mid-16th century. Later, between 1780 and 1800, Bishop José Luis de Mollinedo ordered the complex to be remodeled (Sancho, 1999). In 1973, it was decided that the Episcopal Palace would house the Diocesan Museum, which preserves works by artists such as Alonso Berruguete, Felipe Bigarny, Juan de Flandes, and Alejo de Vahía, among others.
