Johns Hopkins University

Baltimore (United States)

Description

The university is named after Johns Hopkins, a businessman who made significant investments in the railroad industry. Before his death, this American philanthropist decided to use his fortune to establish a university and a hospital in Baltimore. That is how the institution was founded in 1876, making it one of the oldest universities in the United States. Its first president was Daniel Coit Gilman, who established the university press and the schools of nursing and medicine.
