J. Paul Getty (1892–1976) grew up in a family involved in the oil industry. His comfortable financial situation allowed him to travel throughout Europe with his family. His father, George, advised him to invest in oil wells, and he made his first million dollars in 1916. However, Paul Getty was not only interested in the family business; he also became a major collector of art. Through the J. Paul Getty Trust, he provided substantial funding, as well as his personal collection, to establish the Getty Center. It consists of various buildings that house the Getty Foundation, a research institute, an auditorium, and more. Today, it holds one of the most important art collections in the world.
