Description

Robert von Hirsch (1883–1977) was born in Frankfurt am Main (Germany) into a wealthy Jewish family. In addition to his business activities, Hirsch was deeply interested in building his own art collection, consisting mainly of medieval and Renaissance works. In 1933, he was forced to leave Germany and emigrated to Basel, Switzerland, taking part of his collection with him. Before his death, he donated some works to various museums, while the rest were auctioned at Sotheby’s in 1978.
