Description

The Palace of Henry IV (1425–1474) originally occupied Gobernador Llasera Street, Plaza de la Reina Doña Juana, Cronista Ildefonso Rodríguez Street, and Arias Dávila Street (Segovia). However, after the monarch’s death in 1474, the palace ceased to serve as a residence, as Isabella I of Castile (1451–1504) preferred to stay at the Alcázar. Instead, it was decided to divide the property among three noble families. This is how, in 1518, Pedro López de Medina and Catalina de Barros founded the Hospital de la Concepción, also known as the Antiguo Hospital de Viejos (Segovia). Inside, it housed a Renaissance chapel featuring a Mudejar coffered ceiling and two sculptures of its founders, which are still preserved today. Over time, its function changed; in 1836, the Special School of Fine Arts was established there. By the mid-20th century, the building had fallen into disrepair, so the Provincial Council of Segovia converted it into a museum. Today, the building houses the collection ofEsteban Vicente (1903–2001), an artist associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement of the New York School.
