Description

The origins of the Alcázar (Segovia) likely date back to the Roman period, as granite ashlars similar to those of the city’s aqueduct have been found there. In the 12th century, it is mentioned in historical records as both a castle and a fortress, suggesting it served a dual purpose: defensive and residential. During the reign of Alfonso X the Wise, the Cortes were convened for the first time at the Alcázar. However, it was during the reigns of John II and Henry IV of Castile that the complex reached its zenith. The Alcázar played a significant role on numerous occasions: the proclamation of Isabella I of Castile as queen in 1474, the War of the Communities, and the wedding of Philip II to Anne of Austria in 1570.

Later, it served various purposes, ranging from a state prison to the headquarters of the Royal College of Artillery. A fire in 1862 destroyed the roofs and part of the Alcázar’s interior, an event that led to the destruction and dispersal of much of its heritage. In this regard, one may mention the collection of tiles from the Alcázar held by the Victoria & Albert Museum (London).
