Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski and Izabela Fleming

Puławy (Poland)

Description

Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski (1734–1823) was born in Gdańsk and was an influential politician, writer, and patron of the arts. In 1761, he married Izabela Fleming (1745–1835), who shared his passion for the arts. Together, they transformed their palace in Puławy (Poland) into the country’s leading intellectual and artistic center. However, the Polish uprising against the Russian Empire in 1830 led to the confiscation of Puławy and the beginning of a long period during which its collection was scattered. The family managed to secretly evacuate most of the collection to Paris, and it was not until 1876 that it returned to Poland thanks to their grandson, Władysław Czartoryski.
