The Czartoryski Library has its origin in the private library of princes Adam Kazimierz (1734-1823) and Izabela Fleming de Czartoryski (1745-1835). Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski (1734-1823) was the son of August Aleksander Czartoryski and Maria Zofia Sieniawska. In 1763 he decided to renounce the crown and devote himself to his passion: the arts. Together with his wife, he built a large library of ancient manuscripts. In addition, they both promoted the arts in Puławy. Czartoryski was a member of Parliament(Sejm) and Marshal of the General Confederation of the Kingdom of Poland. After the November Uprising of 1830 the collection was dispersed, being gathered again by Władysław Czartoryski in 1874. From that time the library joined the National Museum in Kraków. It now houses more than 245,000 volumes dating from the 10th-20th centuries.
