Harry Guggenheim

Long Island Sound, Nueva York (United States)

Description

Harry Guggenheim (1890–1971) was the son of Daniel Guggenheim, a mining magnate who lived in New Jersey (United States). He attended Columbia Grammar School, the Sheffield Scientific School, and Pembroke College at Cambridge. He served as a naval pilot in both World War I and World War II; he was later appointed U.S. ambassador to Cuba during the Hoover administration. Upon his marriage to Caroline Morton in 1923, his father gave him a 90-acre plot of land. Harry hired architect Frederick J. Sterner and the firm Polhemus & Coffin to build his residence, Falaise. There, together with his wife, he assembled his art collection, which was bequeathed to Nassau County after his death in 1971.
