Object history

From the Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña (Burgos), it subsequently passed thorough the collections of Victor Martin Le Roy, Neuilly-sur-Seine, and then Jean-Joseph Marquet de Vasselot, Paris. It was acquired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1991. 

The greater part of the beatus, 135 folios, is preserved in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional(accesion number: 1962/73/2); a collection that entered the museum in 1869. One folio in the Diocesan Museum of Girona, one and a half folios in the Heredia-Spínola Collection in Madrid, and 15 folios in the catalogue of the Metropolitan Msueum of Art in New York belong to this incomplete Museo Arqueológico Nacional beatus. This is one of them.

Description

Christ in majesty appears in the main scene, while in the lower register, the angel of God Directs Saint John to Write the Book of Revelation.

* The relative location of dealers, antique shops, art galleries, and collectors leads us to the places where they were based or had one of their main headquarters. However, this does not always indicate that every artwork that passed through their hands was physically located there. In the case of antique dealers and art merchants, their business often extended across multiple territories; sometimes they would purchase items at their origin and send them directly to clients. Similarly, some collectors owned multiple residences, sometimes in different countries, where they housed their collections. It is often difficult to determine exactly where a specific piece was kept during its time in their possession. Consequently, the main location of the dealer or collector is indicated.
