San Pedro de Cardeña Monastery

Castrillo del Val (Burgos, Spain)

Description

Although the origin of the Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña (Burgos) is not very clear, it is believed that it was founded in 899 by Benedictine monks, becoming one of the most influential monastic centers in Castile. In the 10th century, a group of monks were martyred by Muslim troops, an event that gave rise to the veneration of the "Martyrs of Cardeña" (Martínez Díez, 1982). The monastery was noted for its scriptorium, which produced important codices, such as the Beato de San Pedro de Cardeña. There are numerous pieces from the Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña scattered in museums and institutions. See, in this regard, the scattered folios of the monastery's beatos currently in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).
