Maestro de Riofrío

Active in Ávila in the last quarter of the fifteenth century and the early sixteenth century

Biography

It was Post (1947) who brought the Master of Riofrío to light, an anonymous painter to whom two panels from Riofrío (Ávila) are attributed and which are currently housed in the Ávila Cathedral Museum: the Annunciation and the Purification. This master settled in Ávila in the last quarter of the 15th century and entered the service of Bishop Alonso Carrillo de Albornoz. He is considered a follower of Pedro Berruguete, as he employs similar techniques such as linear perspective and the depiction of naive, gentle human figures. The works attributed to the Master of Riofrío are scattered across various museums and institutions. See, for example, the following: The Crucifixion, The Mass of St. Gregory, or The Death of St. Martin (Musée Goya, Castres); The Annunciation and The Purification (Ávila Cathedral); and the altarpieces in the Church of St. Peter (Ávila).
