Description

Diego López de Zúñiga ordered the construction of the Palacio de los Zúñiga in Curiel de Duero (Valladolid), where he resided until 1412. The building featured rich coffered ceilings and plasterwork, elements that led to its subsequent sale and dispersal. In 1860, the property was purchased by Indalecio Martínez Alcubilla, who sought to sell it to the State (Martínez Alcubilla, 1866). However, he was unable to interest the State in the complex, so he decided to sell it to Agustín Yagüe. The new owner turned the building into a quarry for materials (Martínez Ruiz, 2008). Although the National Archaeological Museum (Madrid) preserves some of Curiel's work, the rest of the fragments are scattered among various institutions, including the Princeton University Art Museum (Princeton, United States), the Williams College Museum of Art (Williamstown, United States), and the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, United States), among others.
