Princeton University Art Museum

Princeton (United States)

Description

The Princeton University Art Museumhas its origins in the collection housed at the university. James McCosh arrived at Princeton in 1869 and introduced new disciplines to the university, such as Art History. William Cowper Prime and George McClellan were in charge of designing the curriculum. Both believed that students should have direct access to works of art, and so the museum was founded in 1882. Initially the collections were housed in Nassau Hall, but in 1890 they were moved to a building designed by A. Page Brown. Among the works from Castilla y León housed in the museum are several alizares from the palace of Curiel de Duero.
