Little is known about the figure of Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858-1901). It is known that he was born into a wealthy family and was involved in the public life of the city of Antwerp. He was a great art enthusiast and an expert in numismatics. Although he sold part of his collection between 1891 and 1892, he had amassed so many pieces that, after his death, his mother, Henriette, decided to establish a museum in his honour (Coo, 1979; Müller, 2021).
