Alfred Elliot Dieterich was the only son of Charles F. Dieterich, an entrepreneur in manufactured gas and electric power plants. Through his businesses, Charles amassed a considerable fortune and, in 1880, purchased over two thousand acres of land in Millbrook (Dutchess County, New York). In 1912, his son commissioned the American architect Addison Mizner to design a luxurious residence (Perkins and Caughman, 2018). He also hired the designer Lockwood de Forest, who was responsible for the gardens. The house was built in the Spanish style, with impressive dimensions and a significant budget. Named La Bienvenida, it was adorned with objects and artworks of Spanish origin.
