The origins of the National Museum of Scotland date back to 1780 with the founding of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. The collection of this group passed into public hands in 1851. Later, in 1985, the National Museum of Antiquities and the Royal Scottish Museum joined forces to form what is now the National Museum of Scotland. Among the works from Castilla y León housed in the institution is a 16th century tabernacle.
