Addison Mizner

Florida (United States)

Description

Addison Mizner (1872–1933) was an American architect and designer renowned for popularising the Mediterranean style in residential architecture in Florida. Born in California, Mizner developed a fascination with Spanish architecture following extensive travels (Perkins and Cauchman, 2018). This influence led him to create unique designs throughout Florida, where his constructions—characterised by tiled roofs, inner courtyards, arches, and artisanal details—became symbols of luxury and sophistication. In addition to his career as an architect, Mizner was an avid dealer in art and antiques, a role that brought him into contact with Arthur Byne (Merino de Cáceres, 2011). He established his own shop, where he sold furniture, textiles, and art objects specifically curated for the residences he designed (Merino de Cáceres and Martínez Ruiz, 2012).
