Description

Dimitri Schevitch (ca. 1850-1906) was a Russian-born diplomat who served as ambassador to several countries. In the 1890s he was in Lisbon, but in 1896 he was posted to Madrid. There he met prominent members of Spanish society and participated in the men's meetings that Juan Crooke organized. It was probably at these gatherings that he met the Count of Valencia de Don Juan, whose passion for collecting brought them together. In addition to exercising his post as a diplomat, during his stay in Madrid Schevitch dedicated himself to increasing his private collection. Although his stay in Spain barely lasted nine years, he acquired approximately four hundred pieces in the country. In 1905 he had to leave for St. Petersburg and a year later, in 1906, he auctioned his collection at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris before his death. Today the objects he treasured are scattered in different museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), The Walters Art Museum (Baltimore) or The Hispanic Society (New York).
