Description

In 1846 François Petit opened the Galerie François Petit, located at 7 rue St. Georges in Paris. After François' death, his son Georges (1856-1920) took over the business and renamed the store. From 1877 the gallery was renamed Galerie Georges Petit and moved to 12 rue Godot de Mauroy. Later, in 1890, they moved again, this time to 8 rue de Sèze. The store acquired great fame and became one of the most important in Paris. They held very important auctions, as well as exhibitions with the participation of impressionist artists such as Pisarro and Monet. In 1920 Georges died and the Bernheim-Jeune brothers took over the business. Although they tried to keep the gallery afloat, it closed its doors in 1933.
