From the personal collection of Laurence W. Hodson. The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
Description

William Hodson, father of Laurence W. Hodson (1864-1933), was a partner in the Springfield Brewery of Butlers. After his death in 1890, Laurence continued the business. He became a great collector and patron of the arts. He housed in his personal collection at Compton Hall etchings by Dürer and Rembrandt, as well as Pre-Raphaelite paintings and numerous books. At the beginning of the 20th century, financial problems forced Hodson to sell part of his collection. The first auction took place on May 1, 1906 at Christie's London headquarters, while the second was held on December 5 of the same year.
