Description

John G. Johnson (1841-1917) was born in Philadelphia and was the son of a blacksmith. After completing his studies he entered the law firm of Benjamin & Murray Rush and was subsequently admitted to the city bar. He married Ida Powel Morrell in 1875 and the two resided at 506 South Broad Street. There Johnson housed his art collection, which he had formed on his annual trips to Europe (Winkelman, 1942). It contained paintings by Lorenzetti, Bellini, Bartholomew de Castro, Titian, Joos van Cleve, Courbet, Fortuny, etc. He bequeathed his entire collection to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1917.
