Church of San Pablo, Palencia

Palencia (Spain)

Description

The church of San Pablo was founded between 1219-1220 by Saint Domingo de Guzmán, who had received his training at the Studium Generale in Palencia. The Dominican temple played a very important role in the course of time, since it was the seat of the General Courts of Castile on several occasions. Originally the church was Romanesque, however, between the 14th and 15th centuries it was remodeled and adapted to the late Gothic style (Andrés, 1990). Inside, the main chapel stands out, which was decorated with Renaissance pieces and houses the tombs of the I and III Marquises of Poza, benefactors of the complex (Prieto, 2020). During the War of Independence it was used as barracks by the French army and was later disentailed in 1835 (García, 1986). At the beginning of the 20th century the old convent was demolished and a new building was constructed. It was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931.
