William Hesketh Lever

Description

William Hesketh Lever (1851-1925) was born in Bolton. He was the son of a merchant and the manager of a cotton mill. In 1885, together with one of his brothers, James Darcy Lever, he founded a soap factory. This later merged with the Dutch company Margarine Unie, creating the company Unilever. Lever was a member of the Liberal Party in the House of Commons and in 1917 received the title of Baron Leverhulme. He married Elizabeth Ellen Hulme, with whom he had a son. He was passionate about art and in 1922 founded a museum in honor of his wife.
